About CDSP
  • Letter from the President and Dean

Thank you for visiting the website of Church Divinity School of the Pacific. I hope that after you have learned more about us you will be inspired to engage with us.

Our mission is to provide the very best theological education for those preparing for ordination in The Episcopal Church, for those interested in a special topic or course, for doctoral students, and for clergy and laity seeking continuing education. In addition, we are a place for churches and other institutions in society to convene.

CDSP is a unique environment for community formation, for skill development to serve the church and world, and critical thinking for interpreting the relation of faith to other domains of culture. We are in the heart of the Graduate Theological Union, the largest ecumenical and inter-religious consortium in the United States. Our geographical context is the University of California at Berkeley, and the urban centers of the San Francisco Bay Area. In this environment we are able to give careful thought about what the Episcopal Church and its traditions contribute to God’s spirit in the world in and beyond the church.

Because our mission is responding to the challenges of contemporary society with the good news of Jesus Christ, we have a storied history of venturing out in times of change. In this spirit we wish to be a community that is grounded, welcoming of the challenges that come with change, and creative in imagining new forms of ministry.

Welcome… We look forward to serving you.

Faithfully yours,

Mark Richardson
President and Dean
