New Grant Will Advance Work on Blessings for Same-Sex Unions

CDSP has been awarded a grant of $404,000 by the Arcus Foundation to support the development of liturgical resources for blessing same-sex relationships in the Episcopal Church.

Through a contract with the Episcopal Church, the grant makes it possible for CDSP to support the church's Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music and its work to fulfill Resolution C056 of the church's 2009 General Convention:  to "collect and develop theological and liturgical resources [for the blessing of same-sex relationships], and report to the 77th General Convention" in Indianapolis.

"CDSP has a tradition of first-rate, innovative liturgical education," said the Rev. Dr. W. Mark Richardson, president and dean of CDSP. "Through this generous grant, we can offer that expertise and experience in service to the wider church. We are proud that our outstanding faculty will lead the way in developing liturgical resources to provide pastoral care and response to gay and lesbian Episcopalians."

CDSP and PSR Explore Further Integration Possibilities

For more than a century Pacific School of Religion (PSR) and the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP) have enjoyed a close working relationship, for much of this time in partnership with other member schools of the Graduate Theological Union.  In recent years this relationship has deepened, with several shared programs, including a shared Doctor of Ministry program. A year ago the two seminaries, along with the Graduate Theological Union (GTU), moved toward fuller integration of their administrative services.

The executive committees of the CDSP and PSR boards have agreed to explore together the possibility of further integration of their respective academic programs and operations and to invite other members of the GTU community to join them in imagining new structural relationships for preparing persons for lay and ordained ministry and serving their partner denominations and faith communities. The two schools begin this conversation with an appreciation of the heritage and core mission of our respective schools and of our shared commitment to the Graduate Theological Union.

Our schools are convinced that this is an exciting time for theological education that calls for bold steps.  As our schools prepare to welcome new executive leadership, we look forward to exploring the possibility of walking together into a shared ecumenical future.
